Happy Friday, Oppo. How fast can we get into the weekend?

We’ll close out Lockheed Week with this mockup of the L-2000, with a station wagon for scale. The L-2000 was Lockheed’s offering for the government-funded program to develop a US-made SST to compete with the Concorde. Since everything in the US is supposed to be bigger and better than the rest of the world, the L-2000 was proposed to carry 25o passengers (Concorde held about 120), fly as fast as Mach 3.0 (Concorde maxed out at Mach 2) and have a 4,000-mile range (a bit less than Concorde). The L-2000 lost out to Boeing’s offering, the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , but that program never advanced beyond a full mockup before it too was canceled. Had it flown, the L-2000 would have been powered by the Pratt & Whitney J58, the same engine used on the A-12 and SR-71.

The SST program... In the end, it was only good for crossword puzzle authors.

I’m leaving in 30 minutes for my first ASO gig since March 7. Six months. And I’ve played just one gig in between. Looking forward to it.

And if Boeing had won, we’d have a 2007X right now, the same basic plane from 1971, on its 3rd re-engining, now with a 1% fuel economy improvement and a stretched fuselage with 20% more passenger capacity.

It could be worse. At least you don’t run into “Mauna _ _ _ _”. I guess crossword editors default to “SST” to fill in spaces when “Former map abbreviation” doesn’t work with “SSR”.

All I see is a plane being 3D printed and support in the front part i s heavy duty and in the back it’s pretty weak.

probably won’t print well. you can already see nose drooping.

That gives a pretty good idea of the size of the Concorde. It wasn’t that big.

It’s not too late for them to make the Sonic Cruiser. We can still make this happen.
